The latest from the People's Republik of Kalifornia

The California Federation of Teachers (part of the AFL-CIO; you know, the group whose leader recently received a service award from the Communist Party USA) has adopted a resolution at its annual conference supporting convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal. (He was a former member of the Black Panther Party, was convicted of shooting, multiple times, Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981.) Now, why would they do this? Why because they consider this guy a "civil rights hero", of course! To use their own words:

“Mumia Abu-Jamal has for decades as a journalist fought courageously against racism and police brutality and for the human rights of all people and has taken strong stands in support of working people involved in labor struggles and in support of well-funded, quality, public education,”

Gotta love it!

So let's just run down a quick recap of some of the great stories from this great "Beacon of Freedom and Liberty" known as California:

New fast food restaurants banned in South L.A. - Nothing like telling people what they are allowed to eat..but wait! According to council member Jan Perry, "This is not an attempt to control people as to what they can put into their mouths. This is an attempt to diversify their food options."  Whew! Glad we cleared that up.

Hispanic students in CA school ditch classes to protest the wearing of the US flag on Cinco de Mayo - All about respect you know (at least that's what they were chanting during their protest). Not to worry though! Live Oak High School principal is on the case to quell such anti-Americanism! In response he sent four students home for wearing shirts with American flags on them...oh, wait...

Wikileaks Leaker to be Honored as Hero in California - Ah, good 'ol Berkeley (big surprise)! Remember that private who leaked over 100,000 classified government documents to Wikileaks? (For those slow on the uptake, this is called T-R-E-A-S-O-N) Well, according to the proposed city council resolution, the Army private should be released from prison and praised for his (and I quote), "courage in bringing truth to the American people and the people of the world."

California protesters beat cop with his baton while rallying against tuition hikes - Yes...the terrible, unfair, catastrophic issue that of course warrants an eruption of violence...a UC San Franciso committee was considering a tuition increase (considering, mind you) that would raise student fees 8 percent while expanding financial aid to more students. This didn't sit too well with these student bastions of liberty; about 40 of them jumped the officer in a parking garage and wrestled his baton away from him, and were beating him with it. When he drew his gun, the crowd started chanting, "Take his gun!" Fortunately, backup arrived in time.

Student body president at Cal State Fresno is Illegal Immigrant - He let this little fact stay hidden during the election...nothing like an honest and honerable candidate for student body president, I always say...Apparently there was evidence that school officials knew he was an illegal when he enrolled...

CA school order boy to remove American flag from bike - What is it that Californians have against the American flag? (well, other than being against pretty much everything it represents..) Well, apparently it wasn't acceptable for a 13 year old to have the flag on his bike to honor veterans like his grandfather (btw, he had it on his bike for 2 months prior to being told to remove it). The superintendent for the school district apparently felt that the First Amendment has to be revoked in order to be "more considerate of other cultures"...WTF?

San Francisco takes the "Happy" out of Happy Meals - Yes, it was decided to limit toy giveaways in fast food children's meals that have excessive calories, sodium and fat, and also require servings of fruits and vegetables with each meal! I mean, how dare anyone would suggest that..oh, I don't know...maybe the parents have the job of making the right food choices for their children? But then, that would be against the "collective good." To pretty much sum up in a nutshell the "please take care of me, I can't do it myself" mindset of the Socialist set, Conception Dawes, a 20-year-old mother of a 2-year-old, said she supports the ordinance – anything to help lessen the food’s appeal. “Fast food is really fattening, and it’s really addicting, and sometimes it’s hard to tell a child no,” she said.

CA Republican Loses to Dead Democrat - Good to know that California doesn't discriminate against the Respiratorially-Challenged... apparently Jenny Oropez died, but it was too late to replace her on the ballet...she still ended up winning by a 58-35 margin...don't really know where to begin with this one. Do we start with the ineptitude of the election officials? The complete lack of the general public to check basic facts about their candidate (like if they have a f*cking HEARTBEAT?), or maybe the Republican candidate just sucked so bad that a corpse was considered a viable alternative (hey, it's politics, I can so see that happening.)

Over $11 million  in CA welfare funds spent in Vegas casinos - Not just Vegas, mind you...millions more were spent in Hawaii, Miami, Guam, and elsewhere. In all about $69 million in welfare funds were spent out of state on a variety of luxuries, including Vegas slot machines, cruises, and vacations. Hey, why would anyone want to be a productive member of society? Just hop on the welfare train, no strings attached (other than voting Democrat, of course...and who says slavery was abolished? When one is dependent on the government, you are a slave to the government...oh, the cruises are just perks to buy that Democrat vote.)

Sugary drinks banned from public vending machines - Whew! Hot on the heels of the groundbreaking "Anti-Happy Meal" crusade, another big save for civilization! Cudos to the Mayor of San Francisco and his executive order powers! And don't think he's done with his "Orders of Awesomeness"...he has also banned that evil of evils...yes! I know it's hard to believe such a brave and noble maverick exists in a public office, but it's true...CITY FUNDS ARE NO LONGER USED TO PURCHASE BOTTLED WATER! His reason? Those nasty and EEEE-VIL bottled water manufacturers make too much money.

Governor Ahnold signs bill banning trans fats from the state's 88,000 restaurants - 'nuff said.

Mother, Health group sue McDonald's for "Baiting kids with happy meal toys" - Personal responsibility has officially been declared extinct... They are claiming that McDonald's decision to market directly to young children violates several consumer protection laws.. From a statement on the health group's web site (the frighteningly Orwellian "The Center for Science in the Public Interest"), McDonald's is using toys to "bait" kids, and Monet Parham (the mother) blames McDonald's for making it hard to tell her child "no." You can't make this sh*t up...

CA inmate get kosher meals for "Seinfeld Festivus Faith" - A convicted drug dealer apparently didn't like the regular food he was getting while in jail, so cited his adherance to "Festivus" to get special kosher meals. What is Festivus? It appeared on a Seinfeld episode, and was celebrated with the airing of grievances and the display of an aluminum pole...no joke. Being kosher wasn't mentioned in the episode. This bonehead got away with this for two months before the order was thrown out in court.

Bloodmobiles now illegal due to new regulations - New regulations from the "California Air Resources Board" (CARB) require all diesel powered vehicles to meet new green standards by replacing the engine or the whole vehicle. This will end up costing the San Diego blood bank over one million to convert their eight blood mobile vehicles. And why exactly? CARB based their new regulation on a study conducted by one of their staff scientists, Dr. Hien T. Tran, who, according to CARB, has a PhD in statistics from UC Davis. Problem? Just a tiny one. "Dr." Tran didn't get his degree at UC Davis. He got a mail order PhD through "Thornhill University" in New York, and is unqualified to make statistical analyses. CARB knew of this, but couldn't pass up a chance on a new Socialist green regulation. CARB Board Chairman Mary Nichols admitted that she knew before the vote, but didn't inform the rest of the board because she said it was a "distraction."

22 arrested in LA for protesting "Wall Street criminals" outside of a bank - What was that phrase again? Oh yeah..."Personal responsibility"... I guess getting a mortgage that you couldn't afford, and then having the bank eventually foreclose on your home because you don't make the payments is considered "unfair." According to the protesters, it's the banks' failure to modify many borrowers' loans...not the irresponsibility of the people that were actually expected to honor their contracts. Businesses being evil and all, those stupid old contracts shouldn't be binding on the consumer..

Berkeley to pay for sex-change operations for city workers - Ok, I'm going to assume that it's the city workers' choice whether or not they want a sex-change, and not a requirement for employment... Apparently it's more important that they support their city worker's in dealing with their gender-identity issues, than it is to actually NOT GO BANKRUPT. Berkeley's unfunded liabilities? About 252 million. The city of Berkeley turns over more and more of its property to UC Berkeley (which then pays lower tax rates), and then has forced tax increases to make up for the lost revenue... BRILLIANT! Remember, to a Socialist, it's only your money if you have the approval of the government to keep it. They know best, you know...and you can't deny these poor confused individuals their sex-change. It would violate Berkeley's Sex Reassignment Surgery Policy. (Yes, there really is such a thing.)

Save the Delta Smelt! Because you know...conservation must take precedence over stupid luxuries...like eating! The poor, poor Delta Smelt! A cute wittle fishy that now has a champion in UC Davis professor Peter Moyle! Forget the fact that even Moyle admits the smelt has no commercial value, has a life cycle of just one year, and that even in optimal conditions, it's prone to extinction anyway...  but..but...but...it's an ENDANGERED SPECIES!... The problem? Transferring water from North CA to the dry South, mostly through the Sacramento River delta. This allows saltier water to infiltrate the delta area from San Francisco Bay, which is hurting the wittle fishies. So, the government has purchased farmland in the delta and taken it out of production..and cut off fresh water deliveries to 25 million people, and about 2 million acres of rich farmland south of the delta has been greatly reduced. AWESOME!!! Results? Go fig: Massive unemployment for farmers and farm workers, rising vegetable, fruit, and rice prices, "water conservation" programs implemented that resulted in a series of water rate hikes (hits the poor and those recently unemployed the hardest...), and an exodus of water using industries to more friendlier places...taking even more jobs with them.

I just can't understand why people say that Socialism doesn't work...we have states like California as fine examples of the Socialist utopia...
